What Women Riders Really Need to Know

Insights from Heather Lea’s November Trailside Talk with SheADV

11.17.2025

One of the most powerful things about riding a motorcycle is how much wisdom we gain—not just from the road, but from each other. Whether you’re riding around the world or simply carving out a few miles around your neighborhood, every woman rider deserves real, practical guidance without the sugarcoating. That’s exactly what we received during SheADV’s November Trailside Talk, led by writer, world traveler, and ADV rider Heather Lea.

Heather’s voice has always carried both grit and grace, and this conversation was no exception. She shared stories from her global adventures, but more importantly, she shared insights that apply to all women riders, regardless of skill level, experience, or geography.

RIDING FAR…OR RIDING LOCAL – THE LESSONS APPLY TO ALL OF US

Heather reminded us that adventure isn’t defined by mileage. You don’t need to cross borders or ride remote deserts to face challenges, build confidence, or learn to advocate for your needs. Her advice—on planning, packing, personal safety, body awareness, and communication—is just as relevant on a weekend ride as it is on a round-the-world expedition.

This Trailside Talk wasn’t about bravado. It was about honesty. And as women riders, that’s something we don’t always get enough of.

THE CONVERSTAION WOMEN RARELY HAVE: TAKING CARE OF OUR BODIES ON THE ROAD

One of the most refreshing (and necessary) topics Heather dove into was women’s health—the kind of stuff we all deal with but almost no one talks about openly.

From hygiene challenges on long trips, to preventing infections, to caring for sensitive areas when you’re sweating in gear all day or camping without access to proper facilities, Heather spoke candidly and without embarrassment. It was empowering, validating, and long overdue.

She reminded us that taking care of our bodies is not optional—and that being proactive, prepared, and unashamed is part of being a strong, capable rider.

This portion of the conversation struck a chord with so many of us. It’s rare to hear these topics discussed with such clarity, and I’m grateful Heather brought them into the light.

A RARE AND VALUABLE PERSPECTIVE: RIDING WITH A MALE PARTNER

Many Trailside Talks naturally focus on women riding with other women—but Heather offered a deeply relatable perspective on traveling long-term with a male partner. She spoke openly about the dynamics many of us know all too well:

  • Differences in skill or speed

  • Pressure to “keep up”

  • Communication struggles

  • The occasional argument (or several)

  • Balancing independence with partnership

  • And learning how to advocate for your needs without guilt

Heather’s honesty here was validating. So many women ride with husbands, boyfriends, or male friends—and her experiences remind us that we’re not alone. The frustrations, the growth, the breakthroughs, the teamwork… it’s all part of it. And it’s okay to talk about it.

This recap barely scratches the surface of Heather’s humor, vulnerability, and wisdom. If you ride a motorcycle—any motorcycle, anywhere—I promise you’ll walk away with something meaningful.
